Report: Club are now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Spurs defender on loan

Football Insider have claimed that Sevilla are now in advanced talks to sign Sergio Reguilon on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham.

It was Reguilon’s performances during his loan spell at Seville during the 2019/20 campaign that convinced Tottenham to shell out £25m (Evening Standard) to land the left-back two years ago.

While the Spaniard has played regularly during his time at Spurs so far, he did struggle to adapt to the demands of the wing-back role after Antonio Conte arrived through the door.

The 25-year-old has not travelled with the Tottenham squad to South Korea, which seemingly served as confirmation that he is not in Conte’s plans for the upcoming season (Charlie Eccleshare).

Football Insider have now stated that Sevilla are close to bringing Reguiloin back to the club on loan.

The La Liga club are said to have held extensive talks with the left-back’s representatives, as well as Tottenham, about a season-long loan deal.

Julen Lopetegui’s side are said to be ‘confident’ that they can reach an agreement to bring the Spurs star back to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

I think one of the main reasons that Spurs have decided to loan Reguilon out rather than selling him permanently, is that most Spanish and Italian clubs do not have the funds to make big moves in the current post-pandemic football economy.

This will be an issue that is likely to affect Tottenham’s ability to get market value for the likes of Emerson, Lo Celso and Ndombele as well. Perhaps Spurs will be hoping that an impressive spell out on loan might generate more interest in these players next summer.
