Report: Club contact Jose Mourinho’s staff over move for Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen brought down the curtains on his eight-year association with Tottenham Hotspur last month after his contract came to an end.

The Belgian international made the move from Dutch giants Ajax in 2012 and went on to make 315 appearances in all competitions for the North Londoners (transfermarkt).

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent and is expected to be a highly coveted target and recently admitted that a move to Spain or Italy whilst also revealing that a number of clubs have been in contact to sound out a move since January (Evening Standard).

Portuguese news outlet Record have claimed that Benfica also hold an interest in the player with manager Jorge Jesus said to have contacted Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff to gain a further understanding of Vertonghen.

Benfica are said to be keen to sign a left-footed central defender who can help them push for the Portuguese league title and also in the Champions League.

The report suggests that Benfica have their work cut out to land Vertonghen with Italian outfit Roma also heavily interested.
