Report: Club could offer star new contract if Spurs offer is not satisfactory

According to the print edition of A Bola (as relayed by Sport Witness), Sporting Lisbon could offer Joao Palhinha a new contract if Tottenham do not make a satisfactory offer for the midfielder.

Tottenham are reportedly in the market for a central midfielder before the end of the month due to the uncertainty surrounding Tanguy Ndombele’s future.

Palhinha, who had an impressive campaign for his parent club Sporting last time out after returning from his loan spell from Braga, is thought to be one of the options on Spurs’ radar.

The Daily Star claimed last week that the Lilywhites’ loan offer for the Portuguese international had been turned down by Sporting.

Record now reveal that Tottenham’s offer for Palhinha could reach €20m (£17m), plus another €5m (£4.2m) for performance-related bonuses.

However, the report adds that Sporting have no intention of selling the midfielder for any value less than €30m (£25.5m) and the club are open to handing him a new contract if they do not receive such an offer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Ndombele stays, the squad would still be in need of a central midfielder if Sissoko and Winks both depart.

I do not expect us to spend much money strengthening the position this summer given that there are other areas that are a much bigger priority to address.

I would not even be surprised if Spurs decided to hang on to Winks for another season.
