Report: Club could replace Tottenham man with free agent in the summer

Italian publication Il Mattino have suggested that Napoli could replace Tanguy Ndombele with Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Mahmoud Dahoud, in the summer.

Ndombele has certainly not set the world alight during his loan spell at Napoli, largely serving as a bit-part player for the Serie A table toppers so far this season.

Over the last few weeks, multiple Italian publications have suggested that the Serie A club are not likely to take up the £30m option to sign the Frenchman permanently.

Area Napoli reported on 12 February that the 26-year-old seemed destined to return to Spurs.

Journalist Ciro Venerato told 1 Station Radio (as relayed by Forza Azzurri) a week later that the midfielder will have to play out of his skin for the next few months if he is to convince the club to keep him.

Il Mattino have now become the latest to suggest that Luciano Spalletti’s men do not plan on signing Ndombele permanently.

The publication states that the Serie A club could replace the Tottenham man with Dahoud, whose contract with Dortmund runs out in the summer.

The likelihood that the 27-year-old would be available on a free transfer is said to make him a much more appealing option for Napoli than Ndombele.

The last thing Tottenham would want to do in the summer is to loan Ndombele out again, given how his two spells at Lyon and Napoli have gone.

The Lilywhites will have to cut their losses and offload him but that would also depend on the Frenchman’s willingness to take a substantial pay cut.
