Report: Club in ‘advanced talks’ to sign wantaway Spurs star – £26m asking price

According to Football Insider, Ajax are now in advanced talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a deal to sign Steven Bergwijn.

Bergwijn has publicly expressed his intention to leave Spurs this summer (AD) after struggling for game time for much of the 2021/22 campaign.

Ajax are said to be keen on taking the winger back to the Eredivisie but The Daily Mirror reported last month that the Dutch club’s first offer for the 24-year-old had been rejected by Spurs.

Journalist Mike Verweij claimed on the Kick-Off podcast last week that Ajax’s latest offer for Bergwijn was worth €17.5m plus €5m in add-ons (£15m plus £4.3m), which was short of Tottenham’s valuation.

However, De Telegraaf stated on Monday that the Eredivisie club were set to make an improved offer for the Spurs man as they are about to receive a cash boost from Sebastian Haller’s impending sale to Borussia Dortmund.

This has now been backed up by Football Insider, who report that Ajax are set to receive £33m for Haller from the German club.

It is revealed that Tottenham’s negotiations with the Dutch club for Bergwijn are now advancing even though Antonio Conte’s men have refused to lower their £26m asking price.

The report adds that a breakthrough between the two clubs is now close and that a deal to take the winger back to the Eredivisie could be in place by the end of this week.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham are doing the right thing but not lowering their demands as despite his struggles for game time last season, Bergwijn’s quality is not in doubt.  I think he is too good for the Eredivisie but I understand why the 24-year-old would be keen to return to Dutch football ahead of the World Cup in November.
