Report: Club ‘insider’ urges Spurs to rehire 35-year-old if Man Utd let him go

Spurs ‘insider’ John Wenham, has asked the North London club to rehire Kieran McKenna if Manchester United let him go.

McKenna was a youth footballer at Tottenham before his playing career was ended in 2009 due to a hip injury.

He took up a career in coaching after retirement and was given charge of Spurs Under-18s in 2015 before Manchester United poached him a year later for the same role.

McKenna eventually become part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at Old Trafford and continued serving as assistant manager under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Reports now indicate that the 35-year-old’s future at the Red Devils is in doubt as he ‘does not command respect’ among the United squad.

Wenham believes that Spurs should ‘pull out all stops’ to bring McKenna back to the club if Man Utd let him go, explaining that the Spurs academy players loved working with him in the past.

Wenham told Football Insider: “I’ve seen a lot of Man United fans blaming Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna for the issues at the club.

“I saw that quite heavily but if McKenna ever became available, which isn’t out of the question with all the changes, I would take him back at Tottenham in an absolute heartbeat.

“He was an outstanding youth coach for us. I know loads of the players like him. He was a big part of our academy and he’s very well respected by the club.

“If Man Utd did sack him for any reason, I would hope the club pull out all the stops to appoint him as our head of youth development. I’ll say it again, he is an outstanding coach.”

After Ryan Mason’s promotion from the head of player development at the academy to a first-team coach, the role in the academy needs filling.

If Man Utd do let McKenna go, he could be the man for the role given his experience working with young players and his knowledge of the club.
