Report: Club now expect Tottenham to spend £17m on player next summer

According to the print edition of SportBILD (as relayed by Sport Witness), RB Leipzig now expect Tottenham Hotspur to activate the option to buy Timo Werner permanently at the end of the season.

Werner has had an impressive start to his spell at Spurs, having started all five matches since arriving at the club, registering two assists (Transfermarkt).

The German international is still waiting for his first goal in Tottenham colours and with Son Heung-min now back from the Asian Cup and with Brennan Johnson breathing down his neck, he now faces a fight for his place in the starting eleven.

Leipzig expect Tottenham to sign Timo Werner permanently

Bild explain that Werner decided to join Spurs after falling down Leipzig’s pecking order because the forward wanted to play regularly to give himself a chance of making it into the Germany squad for Euro 2024.

The report says that the Bundesliga club have received signals from the North London side that they are pleased with how the 27-year-old has done since his switch.

As a result, the expectation at the East German side is that the Premier League club will activate the €20m (£17m) option to buy the former Chelsea man in the summer.

I do not think Postecoglou and the Tottenham hierarchy would have made the decision yet on whether to activate the option. However, £17m is a major discount for a player of Werner’s experience and quality.

One would think that the forward has to perform pretty poorly for the next few months for Spurs to not activate the option. There is also the possibility that Werner himself might not been keen on making the move if he struggles for starts over the coming months.
