Brazilian publication IG Esporte have revealed that Sao Paulo are expected to block the exit of rumoured Tottenham target Pablo Maia in January.

Maia has won a lot of admirers since breaking into Sao Paulo’s starting eleven last season and the teenager is thought to be already attracting interest from European clubs.

The versatile midfielder, who can also play at centre-back, is alleged to be of particular interest to clubs from the Premier League, with Sao Paulo director Carlos Belmonte admitting last week that he has fielded several enquiries from English clubs for the 20-year-old (Terra).

90 min reported a couple of weeks ago that Tottenham were one of the clubs who were monitoring Maia, with the report adding that the Lilywhites faced competition from London rivals West Ham and Fulham for the youngster.

However, IG Esporte have now claimed that Sao Paulo do not wish to cash in on their starlet during the January transfer window. The report adds that the Brazilian club want to wait until the summer to sell Maia as they believe he will fetch a much bigger fee at that time.

If Spurs are indeed seriously considering a move for Maia (which is unclear), they are likely looking at the 20-year-old as one for the future rather than as a player to go straight into the first team. So, the North London club would probably not mind waiting until the summer to sign the Sao Paulo star.
