Report: Club president refusing to negotiate deal for Spurs-linked defender until after derby

According to a report from Portuguese news outlet O Jogo, Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has refused to negotiate a deal for Pedro Porro until Sunday’s derby clash against Benfica is out of the way.

It is reported that Varandas wanted to protect Porro ahead of the match against their bitter rivals to avoid any distractions over where his future may lie come the end of the transfer window.

The Spanish full-back joined Sporting from Manchester City back in the summer of 2022, having spent two years on loan with the Portuguese side. Porro has 11 goals and 19 assists in 94 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt).

His form this season that has really caught the eye with the 23-year-old having contributed two goals and ten assists in 22 matches so far this term including some impressive displays in the Champions League.

Porro has emerged as Tottenham Hotspur’s top target for the January transfer window (Evening Standard) with Antonio Conte looking to add a new right wing-back to his squad (90 Min).

Negotiations between Spurs and Sporting have seen the Portuguese team stand firm in their stance that only by activating Porro’s release clause, thought to be around £40 million, will the player be leaving the club this month (Fabrizio Romano).

It is the belief of journalists such as Nicolo Schira and Rudy Galetti however, that Spurs have already agreed on personal terms with the player himself and just need to work out the transfer with Sporting.

I’d be very keen to see what happens with this situation once the weekend is over. Regardless, as we’ve said many times already, there should be no delays in this deal – we know the price Sporting want, Pedro Porro is a top target for us, so the club should be paying the fee and getting their man.
