Report: Club put contract talks with rumoured Spurs target on hold

Calciomercato have reported that Inter Milan have temporarily halted contract talks with rumoured Tottenham target Stefan de Vrij, putting several clubs around Europe on alert.

Inter’s financial issues have been well documented, with the club needing to raise a sizeable sum in the transfer window through player sales this summer in order to cover the losses incurred due to the pandemic.

It has previously been reported that Tottenham could look to raid the Serie A champions for multiple players this summer, with the North London club hoping to get some cut-price deals.

Inter Live even claimed last month that Fabio Paratici could look to make a double swoop for De Vrij and Marcelo Brozovic for a combined fee of €47m (£40.3m).

If the latest update from Calciomercato is to be believed, the door may have been opened for Spurs to swoop for the Netherlands international.

The report reveals that the Inter hierarchy were looking to extend the defender’s contract, whose current deal at the San Siro runs until 2023.

However, the Nerrezuri have now put the talks with the experienced centre-back on standby due to their financial problems.

It is stated that several big names in Europe have set their sights on the defender but Simone Inzaghi sees the player as an important part of the side and is hopeful of a resolution.

Spurs Web Opinion

De Vrij might just end up costing much less than Skriniar if Inter cannot come to an agreement with the 29-year-old on a new contract.

I can certainly see why Paratici would be after the Dutchman since he will add plenty of experience and composure to our backline and is adept at playing as a sweeper in a back three.
