Report: Club regret not selling 29-year-old to Spurs in the summer

Marca claim that Atletico Madrid regret not selling Yannick Carrasco to Tottenham in the summer after the wing-back’s poor start to the season.

The Telegraph reported during the final week of the summer transfer window that Spurs had entered into talks with Atletico over a deal for Carrasco.

It was asserted that Los Colchoneros are under pressure to sell some players to comply with the salary cap imposed by La Liga and that even though the Belgian’s release clause stands at £51.2m, he would be sold for a much lower fee.

However, the 29-year-old, whose current contract expires in 2024 (Transfermarkt), ended up staying put at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Carrasco has not been a regular in Diego Simione’s team this season, having started just half of the club’s league games so far this season.

Marca now state that Spurs ‘tested the option’ of activating the wing-back’s €60m (£52.2m) release clause in the summer.

It is explained that Atletico now regret the fact that they did not allow Carrasco to make a move to North London in the summer.

The report states that there is a feeling in Madrid that the 29-year-old is no longer the player he once was as he has been ‘incapable of making a difference’ this season.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham may have tested the waters for Carrasco in the summer but I doubt if the club’s interest in the Belgian was concrete.

It would not have made much sense to sign another wing-back following the acquisitions of Perisic and Spence, particularly since it was clear that the likes of Sessegnon, Emerson and Doherty were going to stay.
