Report: Club rejected offer from unknown PL side for Spurs target on deadline day

According to The Athletic’s live transfer blog (on Dec 31), Aston Villa rejected an offer from an unknown Premier League club for rumoured Tottenham target Douglas Luiz on transfer deadline day.

Tottenham strengthened their midfield department through the acquisition of Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentancur on transfer deadline day while the club allowed Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso to depart.

Luiz was reported to be another midfield option on Spurs’ radar, with The Daily Mail backing the North London club to make an offer for the Brazilian in the final few days of the window.

However, Fabrizio Romano stated on transfer deadline day that no offer was expected from Antonio Conte’s men for the Villa star.

If The Athletic are to be believed, Villa rejected three offers in total for Luiz through the course of January, with the latest of those said to have arrived on deadline day.

The Athletic do not mention Spurs but add that Luiz has ‘admirers’ at both Newcastle United and Arsenal.

Spurs Web Opinion

I highly doubt that the deadline day offer for Luiz would have come from Tottenham as we seemingly had the Bentancur deal wrapped up by then.

While a move for a number eight would have made sense for Spurs after letting Ndombele, Lo Celso and Dele leave, Luiz would have been more of the same compared to the players we had in the midfield department.
