Report: Club representatives in London to discuss purchase of Spurs star

Tottenham Hotspur defender, Toby Alderweireld, has been a brick wall yet again in pre-season this year, even wearing the captain’s armband against Juventus.

The Belgian has appeared in all three matches so far, against Juve, Man United, and in the win against Real Madrid yesterday in the Audi Cup.

This comes after the £25m release clause that was written into his contract expired earlier this month, two weeks before the start of the new Premier League season (Standard).

Before this expiration, Tottenham were said to be in talks with Roma over a deal for the centre-back, although no agreement was reached (Sky Sports).

Daniel Levy now reportedly wants to charge as much as £40m if a club wants to attempt to secure the defender for the new season (Sun).

Despite all this, Calcio Mercato now report that Roma are in London to meet with Spurs representatives this week to discuss a possible signing, which seems a little strange.

Spurs Web Opinion:

This sounds like rubbish to me. If they couldn’t afford him then, they definitely can’t afford him now. However, I suppose it could be possible that they are negotiating an agreement ahead of time for a possible transfer in January for a cut-price. For me, this rumour simply can’t be true though.
