Report: Club will not sign on-loan Spurs star permanently despite claims

The Sun have revealed that Harry Winks is set to return to Tottenham in the summer as Sampdoria are not in a position to sign the midfielder permanently.

Winks endured a frustrating start to life at Sampdoria following his loan move last summer as an ankle injury kept him out of action for the entirety of the first half of the season.

However, since returning to action in January, the England international has established himself as a regular in the Serie A club’s starting eleven and has been one of their most consistent performers.

The Sun state that there is no obligation to buy in Sampdoria’s loan deal for Winks, which means that they would have to enter into negotiations with Spurs if they wish to sign the player permanently.

However, it is explained that even if the 27-year-old wanted to complete a permanent move to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, the Italian club simply would not be able to afford a deal as they are now at risk of going bankrupt.

In addition, Sampdoria look certain to go down this season, which further diminishes the possibility of them swooping for Winks.

The Sun claim that Winks will thus return to Spurs this summer and assert that irrespective of who the new manager at the North London club is, he is likely to be on the move again.

This all comes despite Football Insider reporting this week that Sampdoria were interested in paying their £22m clause to sign Winks permanently.

Winks will enter the final year of his contract at Spurs this June. So, the Lilywhites would have to sell the midfielder permanently.

Given the level of performances he has produced for Sampdoria over the last few months, there will likely be some interest from the Serie A for the 27-year-old this summer.
