According to sources at Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur’s top priority for the summer will be to sign a left-sided centre-back.
In a frustratingly inconsistent season, it has become abundantly clear that Tottenham’s main weaknesses lie in the defensive areas.
Only six teams have conceded more goals than Spurs in the Premier League this season, with the Lilywhites shipping 35 goals in 24 games.
While the club has reinforced in the wing-back areas this term, with signings like Ivan Perisic, Destiny Udogie, and Pedro Porro, the centre of defence remains a big problem.
Ben Davies continues to be a reliable option there for Spurs, but Eric Dier has come in for criticism of late for a string of costly mistakes, and Davinson Sanchez has been similarly unreliable at times.
Spurs did sign Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona in the summer, and despite some promising performances in the first half of the campaign, the Frenchman has slipped down the pecking order. The initial deal to sign the player did not include an option or obligation to buy clause.
Lenglet has made 21 appearances for Tottenham so far this season (Transfermarkt), but has struggled for game time of late. It appears Davies is the preferred option in that area now.
It is now thought Antonio Conte is not convinced by the idea of signing Lenglet permanently and is keen to make the left side of defence his priority come the summer.
Football Insider sources suggest the Italian has made defensive reinforcements the number one aim for the next transfer window.
Spurs Web Opinion
It should come as no surprise that strengthening the centre of defence is of the utmost importance in the summer.
Many of our issues this year have come from mistakes in that area, and if we can bring in two new centre-halves I feel we will see a big improvement in the whole team.
A good defence is the foundation of any good side, and we do not have that right now.
