Report: Conte wants to bring 23-year-old to Spurs, sees him as ‘new Vidal’

Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie in January at the insistence of Antonio Conte.

McKennie was linked with a move to Tottenham over the summer, with Fabio Paratici reportedly being keen on bringing the midfielder to North London at the time.

However, the move did not materialise and after a slow start to the season, the USA international has now established himself as a regular in Massimiliano Allegri’s starting eleven.

Fabrizio Romano said this week that Spurs could target a central midfielder in January, pointing out that they tried in vain to sign McKennie on loan during the summer.

Gazzetta have now revealed that the Juve star is liked by both Paratici and Conte, with the new Spurs boss allegedly seeing him as the new Arturo Vidal.

The report simply states that the Lilywhites could make an approach for McKennie when the transfer window reopens.

Despite being a regular in the Juve side over the past few months, it is explained that ‘anything can happen’ with the midfielder if Spurs make a ‘good offer’.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs signing McKennie will almost certainly mean the end of the road for Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli at the club. I personally do not think the American is an upgrade over what we have but Paratici clearly rates him highly.

One can also see why Conte would like the 23-year-old given his engine, athleticism and ability to arrive late in the box.

If the Italian believes he can develop McKennie into a top player, then the club should back him. However, I suspect Franck Kessie would be the priority for Conte and Paraitici.
