Report: Conte wants to bring former Man Utd defender to Spurs next season

CMW.it have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur could look to snap up Chris Smalling on a free transfer when his contract with AS Roma runs out next summer.

Following his struggles during his final few seasons at Old Trafford, Smalling has rebuilt his reputation considerably since his switch to Roma in 2019.

The England international has been a pillar of the Giallorossi backline and has emerged as one of their main leaders over recent years.

Although he continues to remain an important player for Jose Mourinho, the 33-year-old’s future at the Stadio Olimpico is in doubt, with his current contract running out next summer (Transfermarkt).

CMW.it have now reported that both Juventus and Inter Milan are keen on snapping up Smalling as a free agent next summer.

The report adds that the two Serie A giants could face competition from Spurs for the centre-back, with the North London club ready to offer him a route back to the Premier League.

It is explained that Antonio Conte is driving Tottenham’s interest in Smalling as the Italian ‘doesn’t stop thinking about’ the former Manchester United man.

The Roma star is said to be one of Conte’s ‘very first choices’ to reinforce the Spurs backline next summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

With their acquisition of Ivan Perisic last summer, Tottenham showed that they are prepared to relax their policy of not signing players who are over 30 years of age if Conte feels that it is necessary. However, I have my doubts over whether Smalling would be able to cope with the intensity of the Premier League in the twilight of his career.
