Report: Contract clause may allow Spurs to sign target for £35m if PL club are relegated

A report from The Sun suggests Tottenham Hotspur may still be able to sign their number one goalkeeper target Jordan Pickford, despite the player recently signing a contract extension with Everton, due to a release clause in that new deal.

Pickford has been with Everton since 2017, but decided to commit to extending that stay by signing a new four-and-a-half-year deal last month (Sky Sports).

The 28-year-old has reportedly been on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Hugo Lloris for some time now (Daily Mail).

The same publication claims Lloris’ time as Spurs’ number one goalkeeper is coming to an end.

Despite the new contract, journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport recently that we could still see Pickford join Spurs if Everton lose their battle against relegation.

It is thought England’s number one goalkeeper would want to stay in the Premier League to retain his status with the national team.

Now, the latest from The Sun suggests there may be a contractual loophole that can help Spurs nab Pickford in the summer if Everton do drop to the Championship.

The outlet states Pickford is still the first choice for Spurs when it comes to replacing Lloris, and that the new contract he signed with Everton has done little to deter the Lilywhites.

In fact, that contract includes a clause that stipulates the player can leave if the club are relegated this year.

Should that happen, it is thought Pickford’s price tag would be reduced to around £35 million, but it is possible that “could be haggled down” further.

Spurs Web Opinion

The situation regarding Pickford is all conjecture at this moment in time, and I predict his desire to join Spurs will depend largely on where Everton finish this season.

Should Everton be relegated, we can expect to see Pickford leave the club, but if the Toffees retain their status as a Premier League side, he will very likely stay with them.
