Report: Crystal Palace hopeful of beating Tottenham to Championship starlet

The Daily Mail have claimed that Crystal Palace are ready to battle Tottenham for Peterborough starlet Ronnie Edwards.

Edwards has established himself as a mainstay in the Peterborough backline this season and has won many admirers with his solid displays.

Football Insider previously claimed that Spurs had sent scouts to assess the young defender this season and had been impressed by what they had seen. It was alleged that the North London club were prepared to step up their interest in the 19-year-old.

The Mail have now revealed that Palace have also entered the race for Edwards ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report claims the Eagles are hopeful that their record of giving young players opportunities would give them an advantage over Spurs in the race for the centre-back.

It is suggested that Patrick Viera’s side see Edwards as a big part of their future at the back alongside Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen.

The Mail add that the England Under-19 international is valued at around £15m by Peterborough.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs have been linked with a fair few young talents from the Championship over recent years but we never seem to be able to win the race for these players. The last such player we signed was Jack Clarke, who has struggled to make an impact.

Clubs like Palace understandably have an advantage over the likes of Spurs in being able to attract top talents from the EFL as players are more likely to get regular game time at Selhurst Park than they are at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
