Report: Daniel Levy reached out to Pochettino after he took over at Chelsea

Dan Kilpatrick has revealed in The Standard that Daniel Levy reached out to Mauricio Pochettino after the Argentine took over as Chelsea’s head coach to explain why Spurs decided to go in a different direction.

Much to the consternation of many Spurs fans, Tottenham chose against re-appointing Pochettino in the summer, with reports indicating that the 51-year-old was disappointed that the North London club did not contact him about replacing Antonio Conte (talkSPORT).

However, Levy’s decision to pass up on the former Spurs boss and appoint Ange Postecoglou has been vindicated, with the Australian quickly becoming a fan favourite in N17.

Pochettino will return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time since his sacking on Monday night for the big London derby and he is expected to receive a frosty reception from the supporters who once adored him.

Levy reached out to Pochettino after Spurs snub

Kilpatrick has now written about how Levy should learn the mistakes he made during Pochetitno’s time at Spurs and back Postecoglou in January, with the journalist also revealing that the Spurs chairman texted the Chelsea boss after he took over at Stamford Bridge.

The journalist wrote: ‘Eventually, Levy’s best relationship with any of his coaches turned sour — although the chairman was quick to text Pochettino when he landed the Chelsea job — partly explaining why Spurs opted for a completely fresh start with Postecoglou in the summer.’

There is no doubt that many Spurs fans would have blamed Levy and called for him to resign if the Postecoglou appointment had not worked out. The Tottenham chairman took a big risk by passing up on Pochettino and he deserves credit for sticking to his guns.
