Report: Defender linked by Spurs signs new contract with current club

FC Cologne have announced that they have tied up highly-rated left winger Ismail Jakobs to a new deal, amidst reported interest from Tottenham.

Jakobs only broke into the Cologne team in November but has been a regular in the side for the past few months. His displays earned him the Bundesliga’s rookie of the month title for the month of December.

The 20-year-old, who is said to be comfortable both at left-back as well as the left-hand side of midfield has netted two goals in twelve league appearances for Cologne so far (transfermarkt).

The Mail reported last month that the Lilywhites were keeping a close eye on the youngster’s development ahead of a possible move in the summer, while Leicester City and AS Roma were also said to be interested in him.

However, express.de have now revealed that the Bundesliga club have been successful in getting Jakobs to commit to a new contract.

After revealing that the defender had signed a new deal with Cologne that runs until 2022, the club’s sporting director Armin Veh said: “We are very happy about the extension.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I expect us to prioritise both full-back positions in the summer but I think our requirements are different in both positions. With Davies already at the club, we ideally need a left-back who is good going forward to replace Rose. On the other hand, I think we need to sign a more solid right-back who is good defensively, in order to give us a different option to Aurier.
