Report: Defender was delighted when Poch was sacked and replaced with Mourinho

Toby Alderweireld ended speculation about his future at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week when he signed a new contract.

The 30-year-old was at risk of walking away from the North London as a free agent come the end of the current season.

The Athletic claim that the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach played a significant part in Alderweireld’s decision.

Pochettino was sacked after five years and just months after he had taken the club to the Champions League final for the first time.

The report suggests that Alderweireld, who was on international duty with Belgium when news of the exit of the Argentine broke could not contain his excitement when he heard that Jose Mourinho could be the man to take over.

Less than twelve hours later the Portuguese was appointed as Tottenham’s head coach with Alderweireld telling his team-mates that he could end up staying at the club.

Mourinho was said to have been keen on bringing Alderweireld to Chelsea prior to his move from Ajax to North London and also when he was in charge at Manchester United.
