Report: Player who left Spurs at the end of last season rejected Aston Villa move

The Sun (25/07, page 62) have revealed that Paulo Gazzaniga rejected Aston Villa’s approach in favour of a move to Fulham this summer.

Tottenham’s summer rebuild is now well and truly underway, with Erik Lamela and Toby Alderweireld both exiting the club and Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil arriving through the doors over the last few days.

It was, however, Gazzaniga who was the first player out of Hotspur Way this summer, with the goalkeeper parting ways with the club in May after his contract ran out.

The Argentine, who served as Hugo Lloris’ main understudy at Spurs until Joe Hart’s arrival last summer, spent the second half of last season on loan at Elche.

Fulham confirmed last week that they had secured the 29-year-old shot-stopper’s signature but, according to The Sun, the former Spurs star had an opportunity to remain in the Premier League with Aston Villa.

The report reveals the Villans approached Gazzaniga after he became a free agent but the goalkeeper decided he wanted to stay in London with Fulham instead.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think the London factor was the main reason Gazzaniga rejected Villa in favour of a move to Fulham. The former Spurs man would have had to be content to serve as Emi Martinez’ understudy at Villa Park while he will believe that he stands a better chance of competing for the number one shirt at Craven Cottage.
