Report: Djed Spence handed strange shirt number on loan

Djed Spence has strangely been handed the number 90 shirt for Rennes after making a deadline-day loan switch to the Ligue 1 side.

While Spence was expected to be loaned out to make way for Pedro Porro, it did come as a surprise that the player and the North London club chose Rennes as the destination.

The 22-year-old was thought to be of interest to a whole host of Premier League clubs, including the likes of Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Southampton, West Ham United, Middlesbrough and Burnley (90 min).

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold explained on Wednesday that the Premier League clubs who wanted Spence were insisting on an option or obligation to buy with the loan deal, which was something that neither the player nor Tottenham wanted.

The journalist also explained that the England Under-21 international rejected several sides, including the likes of Sassuolo and Atletico Madrid, in favour of a move to Rennes.

It has now been revealed that Spence will wear the number 90 shirt during his six-month spell in France.

Predictably, many Spurs fans on social media made the same joke, remarking that it was nice to see the youngster finally get a full 90 (The Sun).

While warming the bench for the last six months was not ideal for Spence’s development on the back of the breakthrough season at Forest, the 22-year-old would have benefited from training with some world-class players and working under Conte and his coaching staff.

He now has a great chance to get some competitive action under his belt in France and prove to Conte that he is ready to compete for a place in the starting lineup.
