Report: Djed Spence will likely get Spurs chances in closed-doors friendlies

Football.London have revealed that the next few weeks could be crucial in deciding Djed Spence’s future, with the right-back expected to get opportunities in friendly matches ahead of the resumption of the Premier League campaign.

Spence made just four substitute appearances during the first part of the campaign following his move from Middlesbrough in the summer (Transfermarkt), with Antonio Conte continuing to show faith in Emerson Royal.

Reports over recent weeks have indicated that the North London club might loan out the England Under-21 international in January so that he can continue his development elsewhere (The Times).

However, Football.London have now suggested that Spence will have an opportunity to win over Conte and his coaching staff when the Spurs players who are not at the World Cup go through a mini pre-season ahead of the Premier League’s resumption on Boxing Day.

The report adds that the Tottenham coaching staff would have the chance to work with the 22-year-old more closely and show him exactly what is expected of him in the right wing-back role.

Football.London suggest that Spence is likely to get opportunities to prove himself in a series of behind-closed-doors friendly matches that Tottenham will play over the coming weeks.

With Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty also not in the World Cup, I fear that Spence’s opportunities even in those friendlies would be quite limited. If Conte and his coaching staff do not think the 22-year-old is ready to start games, it would be in the interest of all parties to loan him out to a Premier League club.
