Report: Eight clubs have shown interest in Spurs defender but he won’t leave in January

The Daily Express reporter Charlie Gordon has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are set to hang on to Japhet Tanganga despite the defender attracting plenty of interest in the final few days of the transfer window.

Tanganga has been used extremely sparingly by Antonio Conte this season, having made just three appearances across all competitions so far in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt).

The 23-year-old was handed just his second start of the season in the FA Cup fourth-round clash against Preston North End on Saturday and he produced a commanding and composed display at right centre-back as the Lilywhites emerged 3-0 winners.

Gordon has now taken to social media to reveal that as many as eight clubs have expressed interest in signing Tanganga before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

However, he explained that Spurs will prevent the defender from leaving as Antonio Conte would want him to be replaced, and the Lilywhites do not want to spend ‘unnecessarily’ on another centre-back.

The issue with loaning out Tanganga is that Tottenham are already at the limit of non-homegrown players, which means that the 23-year-old cannot be replaced with someone like Hincapie. We would have to find another homegrown replacement, which is quite difficult at this stage of the transfer window.
