Report: England midfielder set to reject Spurs and fight for his place instead

Despite ongoing interest from Tottenham Hotspur, it is thought Conor Gallagher will reject a move across London and opt to stay and fight for his place in the Chelsea line-up instead.

With Ange Postecoglou taking over at Spurs this summer, there has been a substantial period of transition at the club, with players coming and going.

It seems the Australian’s new 4-3-3 system requires a different kind of midfielder, which has put Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg‘s place in the Tottenham squad in doubt (Daily Mail).

With this in mind, Spurs have been linked with a number of new central midfielders. One player on the North London club’s radar, rather surprisingly, is Chelsea star Conor Gallagher (Evening Standard).

Players very rarely swap Chelsea for Tottenham, or vice-versa, but Spurs have persisted with their pursuit of the English midfielder this summer. However, it was suggested earlier this month that Chelsea were no longer willing to let Gallagher leave (Football Insider).

Conor Gallagher wants to stay at Chelsea

Now, the latest from sources at Football Insider claims Gallagher himself is determined to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place, and it is expected the 23-year-old would actively reject a move to Spurs.

Despite starting the first three games of the Premier League campaign, it is suggested Gallagher “could be dumped out” of the starting line-up in favour of new signing, Romeo Lavia, eventually, as Mauricio Pochettino continues to rework his squad.

The latest update claims Chelsea would consider “letting him go for the right price,” but when it comes to Gallagher himself, there is a reluctance to move on.

I cannot see this deal working out for us at all. Chelsea want a big offer for Gallagher, which is not ideal, and the player himself doesn’t even want to leave. There are plenty of other options out there and we should be focusing our attention on attainable targets.
