Report: European club to make last ditch attempt to give Vertonghen a way out of Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino may have to be careful in how they treat defender Jan Vertonghen over the next week.

Poch has left the Belgian left-sided centre-back out of the starting line up for all three matches this season, including two unused sub appearances and one complete omission from the squad.

This comes rather ironically as Tottenham’s defence has been all the weaker for it, with Alderweireld and Sanchez conceding a goal in each of the three matches.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld have forged one of the best and most consistent partnerships in world football over the last few seasons, so the decision to drop Jan seems strange.

Now, German football magazine Kicker, has reported that Bayer Leverkusen are preparing a last-minute bid to lure Vertonghen away from North London (as reported by transfermarkt)

This would perhaps be their best chance as Vertonghen can’t be happy about being left on the bench. The transfer window shuts on September 2.
