Report: European giants eye managerial change with Pochettino emerging as contender

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is one of the contenders to replace Quique Setien at Barcelona, according to a report by The Daily Mail.

Barca have struggled for consistency since the restart of La Liga last month with their chances of retaining the title having taken a massive hit after the 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday left them four points behind league leaders and rivals Real Madrid.

The Daily Mail claim that pressure continues to mount on Setien and that the Catalan giants could show him the door in an effort to salvage their Champions League campaign.

The report suggests that Pochettino, who has been out of work since parting ways with Spurs in November, is one of the names that Barca are considering.

Despite the former Spurs boss claiming back in 2017 that he could never manage Barcelona due to his history with local rivals, Espanyol (Guardian), it is claimed that the reigning La Liga champions have not given hope of appointing the Argentine.

While Pochettino’s name is among those on Barcelona’s radar, it is revealed that Xavi Hernandez remains the favourite for the role if Setien is sacked.

Pochettino is a man of principle and not one to go back on his word. However, given that he has been without work for over six months, he must be itching to get back to football. So perhaps, an offer from Barcelona might prove too tempting for the Argentine to turn down.
