Report: European team interested in triggering Alderweireld’s release clause

Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to hold onto their star centre-back Toby Alderweireld for at least another season, with the Belgian’s contract expiring in 2020.

Toby’s contract was due to run down this summer, but Spurs chose to trigger an extension clause earlier this year.

Unfortunately, while this added a year to his deal, it also meant that any team could come in and meet Alderweireld’s £25m release clause this summer (Guardian).

The release clause runs until July 26, two weeks before the start of the Premier League season, meaning Spurs have 16 days left to hang onto the star.

However, while there have been no reported bids as of yet, Sky Sports have now reported that Italian giants Roma are interested in triggering the £25m clause.

Sky add that Toby’s teammates expect him to fly out to Asia with the squad for pre-season, with the first match being on July 21 against Juventus.

However, Corriere dello Sport claim that Spurs are interested in a player plus cash offer for Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, involving Alderweireld.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Not to be insulting, but if Toby left Tottenham for Roma, I would be surprised and a little disappointed. At the moment, I would see that as a step down for the Belgian superstar, especially after Tottenham’s Champions League final last season. I could understand Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, PSG, or the like, but I just can’t see Roma happening unless Spurs use Toby as a makeweight in another transfer.
