Report: Everton ‘discussed’ making move for player who left Spurs this summer

Everton have reportedly ‘discussed’ a potential move for former Tottenham defender Serge Aurier, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The 28-year-old has been a free agent in the transfer market after he and Spurs mutually agreed to terminate his contract at the club.

Aurier found his position at Spurs under serious threat and ultimately slipped down the pecking order behind the likes of Japhet Tanganga, Matt Doherty and summer signing Emerson Royal.

The Ivorian international made the move to England in 2017, and it has been recently reported that he is keen to remain in the Premier League if possible.

The Liverpool Echo now report that Everton have been keeping tabs on Aurier following his new status as a free agent, and considered making an offer to him.

However, the report also states the Toffees currently ‘are not actively pursuing’ a deal for the full-back.

Rafa Benitez has been experiencing a selection headache early into the season due to injuries and has been scouting the transfer market for cheaper deals that could bolster his squad.

Aurier has reportedly stated he is keen to stay in England, but his wages could be an issue for some clubs. He was earning good money at Spurs, and with the season already underway, the figure could be a stumbling block in negotiations. A move to a club like Everton, though, could be good for him.
