Report: Everton leapfrog Tottenham in the race for central defender

Football Insider have claimed that Everton have now overtaken Tottenham Hotspur and moved into pole position in the race for Harry Maguire’s signature.

The report states that Manchester United are willing to cash in on Maguire, who was stripped of the club captaincy by Erik Ten Hag earlier this summer.

It is alleged that the Red Devils would accept £35m for the centre-back but the player wants his £10m per year contract paid up before agreeing an exit.

The report adds that Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham United had all registered an interest in Maguire, with the Hammers even considering a second offer after their opening bid of £20m was turned down.

Everton are ahead of the pack in race for Maguire

However, it is explained that the Toffees have now moved to the front of the queue for the England international’s signature ahead of the aforementioned London trio.

Sean Dyche is said to be keen on bolstering his options at central defence following the departures of Yerry Mina and Conor Coady, and has allegedly identified Maguire as a good fit.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Tottenham ever seriously considered Maguire as an option as he is not a particularly good fit for the profile Postecoglou would want.

While the England international is excellent on the ball and strong in duals, he doesn’t quite have the recovery pace to play in a high line, and his age means that he is perhaps not as coachable as more young, up-and-coming centre-backs.
