Report: Everton were keen on player who Spurs signed last summer

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham right-back Emerson Royal was on Everton’s radar before he completed a move to the North London club last summer.

Emerson showed some signs of promise when he operated in a back four under Nuno Espirito Santo in his first few months at Spurs.

However, since the change of system following Antonio Conte’s arrival, the Brazilian has been found wanting, particularly going forward.

Matt Doherty has now displaced the former Real Betis man as Conte’s preferred starter in the right wing-back role in recent matches.

According to reports, Tottenham are open to cashing in on Emerson this summer, just a year on from signing him, with the Spurs head coach keen on upgrading the right wing-back area (The Sun).

If The Athletic’s latest update is to be believed, Emerson could have ended up at Goodison Park if Everton had previously followed through with their interest in the player.

The report explains that the Toffees were eyeing the right-back during his time at Atletico Mineiro as Seamus Coleman’s long-term replacement.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not surprised that the likes of Everton and Arsenal (Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol) also showed interest in Emerson since the Brazilian seems to have the attributes required to succeed in the Premier League.

I still think he can be a very good option if played as a right-back. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, I just do not see him growing into the wing-back role as he cannot beat players or deliver quality crosses with consistency.
