According to La Repubblica (as relayed by Football Italia), former Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte has emerged as one of the top contenders to replace Stefano Pioli at AC Milan.
Conte joined Tottenham in November of 2021, taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo and the Italian lasted 15 months in the hot seat before eventually parting ways with the club back in March of this year.
While Spurs showed some signs of improvement in Conte’s first season at the helm, clinching a fourth-place finish from an unlikely position, they went backwards significantly in the 2022-23 campaign, with the 54-year-old unleashing an extraordinary rant before departing (ESPN).
Conte could be set for return to management
La Repubblica have now said that the former Inter boss has emerged as one of the leading contenders to take over at cross-City rivals Milan.
The Rossoneri, who dumped Conte’s Spurs out of the Champions League last season, find themselves 11 points adrift of the Nerazzurri at the top of the Serie A table, and Pioli’s position is now said to be under threat.
It is explained that the Milan hierarchy are open to sacking Pioli but want to wait until the right moment to do so.
The report adds that Conte and Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi are both the leading options, but both managers would only take the job next summer.

Despite Conte’s struggles at Tottenham, his stock in the Serie A remains quite high and he would undoubtedly be one of the leading candidates for any top job that opens up.
However, most Serie A clubs are in financial turmoil at the moment and given that the 54-year-old is someone who demands significant investment into the squad, they might think twice about turning to him.
