Report: Ex-Spurs star will try to convince Vertonghen to quit North London

Christian Eriksen will reportedly do his utmost to convince Jan Vertonghen to join him at Inter Milan when the defender’s contract with Spurs runs out in the summer, according to the latest reports from Italy.

Football Insider revealed late last month that Spurs were preparing to start next season without Vertonghen after he rejected the club’s latest one-year offer on reduced terms.

The Belgian international is said to have demanded a two-year extension instead.

The 32-year-old is reportedly a wanted man with the likes of Roma and Napoli said to be interested in him but it is Inter who are said to be leading the race for his signature (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness).

Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sempre Inter) now reveal that the Serie A side will use former Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen, who moved to the San Siro in a £17 million deal in January (BBC), to convince the Spurs defender to join the club.

It is claimed that Vertonghen’s international teammate Romelu Lukaku will also urge the centre half to join him at the Nerazzurri next season.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that many clubs across Europe are likely to be cash-strapped this summer due to the effects of the coronavirus shutdowns, free agents will likely be in very high demand this summer. It doesn’t surprise me that several Serie A clubs are looking at the Vertonghen as I believe the Italian league will probably be a better fit for him at this stage of his career.
