Report explains how Daniel Levy feels about Conte’s Spurs contract stance

The Daily Mail has reported that Daniel Levy is not irked by Antonio Conte’s unwillingness to sign a new contract with Tottenham.

Much to the consternation of many Spurs fans, The Athletic reported on Thursday that some sources close to key figures at Spurs are now less optimistic that Conte will sign a new contract.

The report added that the prospect of the Spurs head coach departing at the end of the season is now more realistic than it was a few months ago.

It was explained that Levy had always been clear with Conte that there will only be a limited amount of money to spend and the report posited that the Italian might be putting pressure on the Spurs chairman to loosen his purse strings, knowing the leverage he has.

The Mail have now claimed that despite Spurs offering Conte a £1m-year pay rise, the club’s attempts to tie down the 53-yer-old look set to fail.

It is said that the former Inter boss wants to see evidence that the club’s hierarchy shares the same level of ambition as he does to win major trophies. The report adds that Levy is ‘comfortable with the situation’ as contract talks continue.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect the stories about Tottenham considering re-appointing Pochettino were leaked by the club to signal to Conte that he does not have unlimited leverage in negotiations. Both Conte and Levy are tough negotiators, who were never going to get bossed around.

As much as Conte knows that Levy will come under pressure from fans if he walks away, the Spurs chairman knows that it will be another massive blight on the Italian’s record if he walks away, and he might thus never get a top Premier League job again.
