Report explains why Emerson Royal is not leaving Tottenham this month

With Matt Doherty reportedly on his way to Atletico Madrid for the rest of the season, the Evening Standard has claimed Emerson Royal was also on the Spanish club’s radar but the player did not want to leave Tottenham Hotspur this month.

The merry-go-round of right wing-backs at Tottenham is in full swing on this deadline day it seems. With Pedro Porro’s long drawn-out transfer saga looking to be at an end, with a deal set to be finalised today (Record), that leaves Spurs with an abundance of players in that position.

First out of the door was Djed Spence, who is heading out to France to join Rennes on loan for the rest of the season (Tottenham). The youngster opted for the move to the Ligue 1 side to ensure he gets regular football and is keen to return to Spurs next season (Football.London).

That leaves Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, and it seems as though it will be the former who makes way before the deadline today. The Irishman is ready to complete a loan move to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid (Matteo Moretto).

The move comes as something of a surprise to many, with Emerson Royal initially thought to be the most likely to leave Spurs this month. But, the Brazilian looks set to remain with Spurs until at least the end of the season now.

According to the Standard, although Emerson “appeared the best fit” for Atletico Madrid, the player “made it clear that he did not want to leave” Tottenham.
