Report explains why manager is reluctant to play on-loan Spurs player

Marca have suggested that Diego Simione is not convinced by Sergio Reguilon, which is why the on-loan Tottenham man has not featured despite being fit for the last few weeks.

A groin injury kept Reguilon out of action for the first couple of months of the season but the left-back is now said to be available for selection

Marca now shine a light on what they describe as the ‘Reguilon mystery’, explaining why the defender is yet to make his debut for Atletico despite being available.

The report adds that the 25-year-old was a ‘surprise signing’ and that Diego Simeone preferred Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso to replace Renan Lodi after he joined Nottingham Forest. However, with Alonso joining Barcelona, the Argentine was forced to accept the Tottenham man instead.

The report adds that Reguilon recovered from his pubalgia weeks ago but Simeone does not believe the former Real Madrid man can compete ‘at the level’ that he demands.

Marca add that the situation is unlikely to change for Atletico’s last La Liga game against Mallorca before the World Cup, with the left-back likely to remain on the bench.

When Marca say that Simeone does think Reguilon is not at the required ‘level’, perhaps they mean that the left-back is still not at peak physical condition.

The 25-year-old will have an opportunity to work towards full fitness during the mid-season break for the World Cup and will be hoping to get opportunities in the second part of the campaign.
