Report explains why Newcastle are keen on beating Spurs to defender

The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle United do not want to miss out on the opportunity to sign Tottenham target Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer, given their current financial predicament.

Until last week, various outlets had reported that the race for Kelly’s signature was between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool this summer.

This includes an update by TEAMtalk, who explained that the Reds had moved into pole position ahead of Spurs for the 25-year-old, who had allegedly decided against renewing his contract at the Vitality Stadium.

However, over the weekend, HITC claimed that the Magpies had also joined in the race for the centre-back and were ready to challenge Liverpool and Tottenham.

Newcastle, Liverpool and Spurs all like Lloyd Kelly

The Mail have now also backed up Newcastle’s interest in Kelly, referring to the defender as ‘one of the most sought-after free agents of the summer’.

The report points out that the club from the North East could not spend much in January since they were close to breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

It is explained that Newcastle are thus looking for some bargain options, with Kelly alleged to fit the profile that Eddie Howe is after.

The publication adds that apart from Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle, the likes of AC Milan, Monaco and Stuttgart have also made ‘proposals’ for the Bournemouth star.

Kelly will have no shortage of offers next summer and as a free agent, he will be at liberty to pick his next destination. I highly doubt if he would be keen on moving to Spurs as he will know that he will only be a squad player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
