Report explains why Spurs may look to complete defender deal before tonight

The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur need to complete the signing of Joe Rodon from Swansea City by 11 pm tonight if they want him to be eligible for the group stages of the Europa League.

Tottenham have been one of the busiest teams in England this transfer window managing to make six new additions in the form of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius.

Reports have claimed that Spurs have now set their sights on securing Rondon from Swansea, with Premier League clubs allowed to make signings from EFL clubs for eleven more days (Football.London’s Alasdair Gold).

The Athletic does confirm that the Welsh international is on Tottenham’s radar and that the club have until next Friday’s deadline to complete the signing, with centre-back being the one area that Jose Mourinho still wants to strengthen.

However, they claim that Tottenham might be pressed for time to complete the deal if they wish to include the 22-year-old in their Europa League squad.

If the club do not have a deal secured for the youngster by 11 pm this evening, the report reveals that he cannot be involved in the group stages of the Europa League.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think having Rodon not available for the group stages of the Europa League would be a problem, even with Foyth leaving, as we still have Dier, Sanchez, Toby, Tanganga and Davies for the positions.

In fact, with the varying rules on ‘homegrown’ status in Europe and domestically, Spurs may not even be able to find room for the 22-year-old in their Europa League squad even if they signed him by tonight’s deadline.
