Report explains why Tottenham missed out on 18-year-old on deadline day

According to The Athletic’s live transfer blog (31/01/23), Tottenham tried to complete a deadline-day deal for Southampton starlet Thierry Small but they could not strike a deal with the Saints for the teenager.

While all the spotlight was on Tottenham’s deadline day acquisition of Pedro Porro, the club also strengthened its academy ranks by snapping up 19-year-old forward Jude Soonsup-Bell from Chelsea.

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas revealed on Monday that Spurs were also working on a deal for Small in addition to Jude Soonsup-Bell but the left-back eventually ended up joining St Mirren on deadline day.

The Athletic have explained that Southampton had recalled the 18-year-old from his loan spell at Port Vale and that Tottenham were looking to sign him permanently on Tuesday.

However, it is revealed that the North London club could not strike a deal with either the South Coast club or the player, with the left-back eventually completing a move to the Scottish club.

Small, who can also play as a left-winger, has made just one senior appearance for Southampton but he has featured 22 times for the club’s Under-21s, scoring five goals and registering three assists (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham probably viewed Small as a good prospect for the left wing-back role and the club might have loaned out the 18-year-old if they had got a deal for him over the line. Perhaps, Spurs will reignite their interest in the Southampton starlet in the summer transfer window.
