Report: Fan backlash was not main reason Spurs dropped Gattuso pursuit

According to a report from Tuttosport (as relayed by Sport Witness), the main reason that Tottenham decided to abandon their pursuit of Gennaro Gattuso was because of a disagreement between Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici.

Spurs decided to end their talks with Paulo Fonseca last week and pursue Gattuso as soon as the Italian became available after parting ways with Fiorentina.

However, some Spurs fans were fuming at the news of Tottenham’s pursuit of the former Napoli boss and expressed their discontent at the 43-year-old’s problematic past comments.

Some sources claimed that it was this fan backlash that led Spurs to eventually abandon their pursuit of Gattuso.

However, Tuttosport have now suggested that the reaction from the fan base was not the main issue that influenced the decision.

The report explained that Levy did not see eye-to-eye with Tottenham’s new managing director of football, Paratici, on Gattuso’s appointment.

Irrespective of why the club decided to abandon their pursuit of Gattuso, it was the right choice. However, if Gattuso was the man Paratici wanted and Levy decided to block the move, that does raise concerns about how much power the club’s managing director of football really has.
