Report: Five Marseille fans arrested after violent clashes against Tottenham

The Evening Standard have revealed that five Marseille fans were arrested amidst violent scenes during Tottenham’s Champions League season-opener on Wednesday.

Tottenham’s 2-0 win yesterday by marred by clashes toward the end of the game, with videos doing the rounds on social media showing riot police being deployed to get the away section under control.

The Evening Standard have now revealed that five arrests have been made for a variety of offences including possession of an offensive weapon, affray, drunk and disorderly, and drugs.

The report reveals that missiles were thrown on several occasions towards the end of the game.

The Marseille fans also allegedly threw bottles and clashed with riot police, with one police officer said to have been injured during the arrest, suffering a broken arm.

In addition, it is revealed that smoke canisters were thrown towards the pitch and the away fans pulled down a Pride banner at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told The Evening Standard: “Five people have been arrested at the Champions League match Tottenham Hotspurs FC versus Marseille FC on Wednesday, 7 September.

“The arrests were for a variety of offences including offensive weapon, affray, drunk and disorderly and drugs; all those arrested are believed to be away supporters. During the match, missiles were thrown on several occasions.

“One officer was injured during an arrest and suffered a suspected broken hand. There was serious disorder at the end of the fixture and additional officers were deployed to restore and maintain order.”

The Marseille ultras have a reputation for this kind of behaviour and so, I cannot say that I am surprised by this. Spurs fans who are planning on making the away trip to Marseille for matchday 6, should be extremely careful.
