Report: Five things you may not know about Gedson Fernandes – Once sold for cash plus 25 footballs

Tottenham Hotspur could be just days away from announcing their first signing of the Jose Mourinho era, albeit a temporary one, as Gedson Fernandes reportedly nears a move.

Sky Sports reported earlier that the player had arrived at Tottenham’s Hotspur Way training facility to finalise an 18-month loan from his parent club.

While he is a class act to watch, Fernandes has a very interesting footballing background, as outlined in a recent report by FourFourTwo.

Let’s take a look at five things you may not know about Gedson:

  1. He was once signed by Benfica from SC Frielas for the price of €250 and 25 footballs.
  2. In the UEFA Youth League in 2016, Fernandes scored from his own half against Besiktas.
  3. Fernandes apparently has a release clause of €102 million.
  4. He wears the number 83 shirt, but Premier League rules currently state that squad numbers must be consecutive or close to the current highest number’, so it is unlikely he would wear the same at Spurs.
  5. He scored the winning penalty kick for Portugal in the final of the 2016 UEFA European U17 Championship.
