Report: Former Ajax star set to follow Alderweireld in signing new deal at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur managed to secure the services of Toby Alderweireld until 2023 earlier this month.

The Belgian central defender was due to be out of contract at the end of the current campaign and could have opened negotiations with clubs on the continent when the transfer window opens tomorrow.

The Athletic report that his compatriot and fellow defender Jan Vertonghen is also expected to sign a new deal in North London.

Vertonghen is also out of contract next summer and is likely to extend his stay with the Champions League finalists rather than walk away as a free agent.

The 32-year-old has been operating primarily as a left-back in recent weeks following the arrival of Jose Mourinho as head coach.

The former Ajax player formed a formidable partnership with Alderweireld in recent seasons earned Spurs a reputation of having one of the toughest defences in the league, until the defensive issues appeared this season.

Vertonghen notched up his 300th appearance in Spurs colours during the Boxing Day win against Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Spurs official).
