Report: Former Premier League boss tips Mourinho to end eleven-year trophy wait

Carlos Carvalhal believes Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy drought will come to an end under Jose Mourinho.

Only a few weeks have passed since Jose Mourinho made his debut in the managerial hot seat for Tottenham, but has already lifted the mood after a dismal start to the campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham have failed to win a competitive trophy since 2011 when Jonathan Woodgate was the hero after he scored an extra time winner against Chelsea in the League Cup at Wembley.

Whilst the North London club have come close in recent years to ending their barren spell with heartbreak the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup, Mauricio Pochettino was unable to add to the trophy cabinet in North London.

Jose Mourinho is a serial winner having secured silverware at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The Portuguese has already lifted the club from fourteenth in the Premier League to seventh having won four of his opening five top flight fixtures.

Fellow manager and compatriot, Carlos Carvalhal who has managed Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday believes his appointment will bring trophies to North London.

Speaking to Sky Sports (10/12/19 at 1:30pm) he said: “Tottenham is not winning. Even Pochettino did a fantastic job, they are not winning things”

“You know Mourinho like that. You see with Inter Milan. They didn’t win anything for 20 years and started winning with him. At Chelsea was the same.”

“I am sure he will create trophies because Tottenham will win trophies in short to medium term”

Tottenham’s main objective for the remaining months would have been to secure Champions League football once again, and currently only six points behind Chelsea who occupy fourth place.

However, Jose Mourinho has already progressed into the knockout stages of Champions League, whilst their FA Cup campaign also set to begin next month with a trip to Middlesbrough.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s been eleven years since we last tasted silverware and need to take the FA Cup seriously this year. Players such as Harry Kane will no doubt want to win trophies in their career. Jose Mourinho has experience in winning these cups, as he did with Manchester United, and could go all the way with the current squad at his disposable.
