Report: Former Spur impresses Man Utd and Man City scouts during recent display

According to a report in Portuguese publication O Jogo (as relayed by Sport Witness), both Manchester United and Manchester City sent scouts to Portugal last weekend to watch Benfica take on Vitoria de Guimaraes, and were left impressed with the performance of former Spurs winger Marcus Edwards.

Edwards was rated highly at Tottenham while he was rising through the youth levels with former Spurs boss once even likening the youngster’s ability to Lionel Messi (Sky Sports).

However, the 21-year-old failed to break into the Spurs first team and was subsequently sold to Vitoria in the summer.

Since his move to Portugal, the youngster has got his career back on track, impressing in several of his displays this campaign.

It is claimed that both Man Utd and City sent scouts to primarily watch Benfica defender Ruben Dias in action. However, it turns out that the scouts from the two clubs, as well as several other clubs who were also in attendance, were particularly left impressed with Edwards’ display.

The former Spurs winger was reportedly a threat down the right hand side all game and gave Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo a torrid time.

Despite his impressive performance, there is no indication so far that either United or City are considering making an offer for Edwards.

Spurs Web Opinion

I, like many Spurs fans, was desperately hoping that it would work out for Edwards at Spurs as his talent was there for all to see. However, it looks like the youngster did have attitude problems and that could have been the reason behind his sale. Hopefully, he matures with age and goes on to fulfil his potential.
