Report: Former Spurs man attempted to bring Pochettino to Ligue 1 club this year

The Athletic have reported that former Tottenham Hotspur director of football, Paul Mitchell, offered the managerial job at Monaco to Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine turning down the proposal.

Pochettino has been without work since parting ways with Spurs back in November, with the Lilywhites replacing him with the serial winner, Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine has been heavily linked with the Newcastle United job (Sky Sports) but with the club’s takeover yet to be given the green light (BBC Sport), Steve Bruce remains in charge of the Magpies.

The Athletic now claims that Pochettino could have ended up in Ligue 1, with Mitchell keen to bring the former Tottenham man to the Stade Louis II.

Mitchell, who worked with Pochettino at Southampton as well as Tottenham, left RB Leipzig to join Monaco last month.

It is revealed that Pochettino and Mitchell still share a good relationship and the former Spurs director was keen to make the 48-year-old his first appointment at Monaco.

However, the former Tottenham boss is said to have declined the opportunity as he continues to assess his options ahead of a possible return to management.

Monaco have now confirmed that former Bayern Munich boss, Niko Kovac, will be their next manager.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Pochettino is to move on from the Premier League, I can only see him signing for an elite European club. PSG are the only team in France that I think the former Spurs boss will consider managing. His intentions to remain in the Premier League seem pretty clear and I would not be surprised if Newcastle get their man, even though I do not think that will be the right move for Pochettino.
