Report: Former Tottenham wonderkid John Bostock signs for his 15th club

A report from The Yorkshire Post has revealed former Tottenham Hotspur player John Bostock has signed for National League side Notts County, six months after leaving Doncaster Rovers.

Bostock began his career with Crystal Palace, before joining Tottenham in the summer of 2008. He had six loan spells at five different clubs during his time with Spurs, including Brentford, Hull, Sheffield Wednesday, two stints at Swindon Town, and a short spell with Toronto in the MLS.

The midfielder never managed to make his breakthrough at Spurs, and made just four first-team appearances during his time at the club (Transfermarkt).

His career since leaving Spurs has seen him play in Belgium, France, and Turkey, with clubs such as Royal Antwerp, Lens, and Bursaspor.

Bostock had a brief loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the 2019/20 season, where he made nine appearances (Transfermarkt), before being released by his parent club Toulouse.

He then joined Doncaster Rovers in January 2021 and made 43 appearances for the Yorkshire side in an 18-month period (Transfermarkt).

After turning down a new contract with Doncaster, Bostock had been training with Notts County over the last few weeks and has now signed a permanent deal with the National League leaders.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post on the signing of the 30-year-old, Notts County coach Luke Williams said: “The opportunity for John to come and train with us was a pleasant surprise to say the least and, very quickly, you could see he has the physique and quality of a top player.

“He’s powerful, very strong when he needs to protect the ball and can move freely. He doesn’t need backlift – he pushes the ball around very cleanly.

“What you don’t notice until a little later, however, is that he has the mentality of a top player as well. He’s very bright and his attitude is superb.

On what Bostock can bring to the promotion-chasing side, Williams added: “I feel really strongly that John will add value – not only as a player, but as a man.

“He’s gone full circle in football, experiencing really high moments but also probably some low and disillusioned periods, with lots of success woven in.”

Williams also addressed the journeyman qualities Bostock brings, after signing for his 15th club. “He’s bounced back from every difficult period he’s faced and is going to be able to give some really valuable help and advice to the players around him. He’s someone you can’t fail to respect.”

It can’t be easy for players like this, constantly moving around, never really finding a club to settle at. Fair play to Bostock for continuing to try new things and seek out opportunities where he can. Hopefully, he can slot into an already impressive Notts County side and take them up this year.
