Report: Four other Premier League clubs wanted Timo Werner – He chose Spurs

Football Insider have revealed that Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa were keeping tabs on Timo Werner before Tottenham Hotspur moved to sink the defining blow for the striker.

It has been widely reported over the last 24 hours that Spurs have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for the transfer of Werner on an initial loan deal with an option to buy for £13m-£17.2m (David Ornstein).

It was even reported by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold on Sunday that the German international is now set to fly to London shortly to seal the move.

This has now been backed up by Football Insider, who say that Werner will have this medical on Monday or Tuesday after giving the green light to the transfer.

Spurs beat plenty of competition for Timo Werner

The outlet claims that Spurs were far from the only Premier League side who were interested in the forward, with the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa said to have monitored his situation.

In fact, it is asserted that RB Leipzig even offered the former Chelsea man to the Red Devils while the Villans had laid the groundwork to sign the player.

However, it is Ange Postecoglou’s men who are now expected to be the ones to bring Werner back to English football, with the deal thought to be at its final stages.

One would think that Postecoglou would have played a big part in convincing Werner that Spurs would be the right fit for him, which is perhaps why the deal has seemingly progressed so quickly.

The Tottenham hierarchy deserves credit for managing to keep this transfer under wraps, which might have helped them proceed without much competition.
